Note

The only time I’m summoned to this sub is when people want to complain about it. Stop complaining. Move on to other things, if the developer has an announcement you’ll see it. All you’re doing is dragging everyone down in the mud with you.

I think the difference was supposed to be that Holograms are basically NPCs with software that can convincingly pass a Turing test, but there really isn’t any light behind the eyes. Androids are actually sentient, and their personality and emotional states are extensions of that sentience.

One of the implied questions of Voyager, at least to my mind, is if that distinction makes a difference? Especially in S1, it was clear that The Doctor wasn’t respected by the crew because everyone knew intellectually that he was just a chatbot.

I bet the inclusion of “bio-neural circuitry” in Voyager was initially intended to give some meat to the claim that he’s more than just software, but they never went anywhere with that. By the end of the series, it was pretty much settled that The Doctor had personhood. Star Trek’s implicit stance on the matter of ‘should you give a being rights’ is if it quacks like a duck, treat it like a duck.

I agonize about signing up for a new $10 subscription but as soon as that new $2000 device comes out suddenly that same bank account becomes a lot more disposable

It is and it isn’t. I’m vaccinated, have been basically living the normal life, mostly not masking but a bit lately with the new variants. But even still, my office is still closed; I go in and work anyways but I’m technically not supposed to. I kind of enjoy working from home though, so this hasn’t been an issue. The real problems stem from stores and resturants. Either they are closed, understaffed, or understocked. Can’t upgrade a PC, can’t buy a console. I understand that the hospitals are overflowing so the health system is basically shot. So to claim the pandemic is over is really just selfish.

Probably a sure bet that I’m less attractive than you are, and I’m a guy, but I was pretty successful on dating sites regardless, and have been in a serious relationship forever atp. The trick is to give it an honest try you’ll be surprised at how fast things may change.

Tons of cynicism. People care now because it’s front of mind, they see it on the news and realized something was happening and it doesn’t sit right with them. Should everyone had cared all along? Sure, obviously. But in case y’all haven’t noticed, the last four-eight-twelve years was a carnival where our national attention was stretched beyond our abilities to track more shit. Maybe this was on purpose, remember Hong Kong? There was a lot of outrage there too that was successfully redirected to /dev/null

Some practical advice is to try out Zillow, which allows you to apply to many properties under one application fee. I think I spent $60 for me and my SO, and was able to land a very nice place quickly.

The ChromeOS desktop is the desktop for Crostini, it’s not intended to provide a DE for itself. Having said that, surely someone has, it can definitely run GUI apps I’ve installed Steam and played games (very poorly) with it.

It feels like, if anything, Q rushed humanities introduction to the Borg. Picard’s all like “he did us a favor”, but considering all the following interactions (scooping up colonies, First Contact, etc) were a direct result I’m just not sure I buy that. It’s basically established that the reason for The Borg’s out-and-out invasion was they perceived humanity as a threat. Obviously, Humanity is no threat whatsoever so not sure how Q did anyone a favor here.

Because most people back into their beliefs from their emotional state, and therefore it has very little to do with maintaining philosophical consistency. If people could be won over with logic and reason, we wouldn’t be in this situation.

Realistically, you shouldn’t be putting yourself in a position to “lose all the time”. Ideally, you build upon successes and then try to achieve a bigger success. Failing to achieve can be tough, especially when there’s a ton of effort involved, but if you feel like you’re completely on your ass every time then you probably should be thinking of your goals in terms of smaller steps.

Some Libertarians are like OP, in fact, as someone who generally votes progressive lately, I feel like a Libertarian generally but just can’t side with the GOP in the current world. Still, it seems that most Libertarians in the media are really just closeted Republicans, somehow it all seems to wrap back around to full-throated Trump support.

I run Fedora on my XPS 15 and doubt there’s much of a difference. I get firmware updates and everything through Gnome Software. My fingerprint scanner does not work, but all other devices work just fine.

They’ll just give you 26 episodes of save the universe (See: Xindi arch), I just wish they’d just tell one complete story per episode for a while. That’s the original formula, stop trying to make Michael Burnham happen, just go back to the classic formula where everything resets at the end. Please god.

My car probably, if used correctly you could make the news for sure. Beyond that, probably the most dangerous to me is that tile bathroom and bathtub shower; I get into it once a day and I just know one of these days I’ll slip and who knows how bad it’ll be

Tuvok would make it clear that he is not interested in playing human competition sports, and would probably make it a major point of contention. Some crewmates would come to him, say that it’s important to indulge superiors, he wouldn’t have it though, Tuvok’s a bit of a tool.

I’ve always wondered why packages like tlp, powerop, etc aren’t included by default and tuned? Especially with Fedora 34, the laptop experience is starting to feel on-par with Windows and Mac in terms of what GNOME 40 is bringing to the table with gestures and activities. Is there any thought around how to make Fedora more laptop-friendly?

Note

So weird, we just watched this episode the other night. The episode is a bit of a stretch in the sense that they’ve had space travel for a thousand years and something like this has never come up? In our society, we have laws that cover pretty much everything, surely there would be established precedence and nobody (except for Trip) would be confused about the consequences.

I imagine, in reality, ‘euthanizing’ them would be an option. In the context of the story, I doubt they’d call Archer to add a lie to the pile, they could just have easily have not mentioned it. And also, from the alien’s perspectives they did nothing wrong, so it makes little sense to lie.

A final thought I had on the episode is that I thought it was pretty rich, coming from Archer, telling Trip how immature and wrong he was for his little escapade. I understand the notion that Archer always approaches it with the full support of command staff, and Trip was acting alone, but pretending that Archer wouldn’t have satisfied his curiosity is a bit of a stretch. The only difference between that incident and every other time is that Archer was gone, and therefore he and Trip didn’t hold hands while ruining that poor family’s lives together.
