All too relatable. The real kicker is that WebAgency probably _did_ enter this with the best of intentions. Individual contributors care a lot, and the CEO cares a lot, but they aren’t the ones planning and resourcing everything. Agencies are good when a big company needs someone to do their thinking for them through a long-term relationship. Even then, there’s no crystal ball as to whether a relationship is a good idea, will be successful, or if the work will be any good. For individuals, it’s hard to ever recommend an agency, like with anything I think it’s better to play a bigger role in the day-to-day and drive it yourself.

I don’t think Isaac was doing anything malicious or trying to rip you off, but even without intent, the result is the same. One thing I’ve learned about Agencies is that they typically rationalize failures away from themselves. They typically see themselves practicing a set of processes and sell others on the idea that the process is perfected. This is what leads people to these hair-brained “well if you’d sign a retainer, then things would go smoother!”

In fairness, I think we’ve all taken a look at our project’s package.json and wondered where in the hell the front-enders in our org get this shit. But generally, when you look through their trendy set of libraries and the gulp workflows running it, it’s typically fairly sensical. I find a lot of times, this kind of thing is a team member or two trying to enhance their dev experience, and while it can be hit-or-miss it’s not like people don’t do these things in other areas. I think all developers get wrapped up bulking out their areas of concern, and if we’re not careful other people won’t be able to make heads-or-tales of it. So when they use your projects, they should be able to just drop right in without a bunch of specialized knowledge. I think this is why it’s important to add libraries sparingly, and to automate everything you can, as that removes barriers to entry for people just trying to cling on to life.

I went down this path, and while it was ok I didn’t think it handled weird resolutions well, and I wanted something kind of specific with Google Calendar that wasn’t trivial to pull off. I ended up going with dakboard.com which has a nice web portal to manage it, and even has a raspbian image with the software preloaded.
