As is often brought up, The Dominion thinks in terms of decades and centuries. In all likelihood, forcing a conflict immediately after contact is what saved The Federation. Otherwise, The Dominion would have had ample opportunity to prepare for a first strike.

I thought it wasn’t the Borg logo technically, but the logo the freed Borg that Lore came to control used to identify themselves. I can’t recall the Borg ever flying colors outside of that one context.

It feels like, if anything, Q rushed humanities introduction to the Borg. Picard’s all like “he did us a favor”, but considering all the following interactions (scooping up colonies, First Contact, etc) were a direct result I’m just not sure I buy that. It’s basically established that the reason for The Borg’s out-and-out invasion was they perceived humanity as a threat. Obviously, Humanity is no threat whatsoever so not sure how Q did anyone a favor here.

Tuvok would make it clear that he is not interested in playing human competition sports, and would probably make it a major point of contention. Some crewmates would come to him, say that it’s important to indulge superiors, he wouldn’t have it though, Tuvok’s a bit of a tool.

So weird, we just watched this episode the other night. The episode is a bit of a stretch in the sense that they’ve had space travel for a thousand years and something like this has never come up? In our society, we have laws that cover pretty much everything, surely there would be established precedence and nobody (except for Trip) would be confused about the consequences.

I imagine, in reality, ‘euthanizing’ them would be an option. In the context of the story, I doubt they’d call Archer to add a lie to the pile, they could just have easily have not mentioned it. And also, from the alien’s perspectives they did nothing wrong, so it makes little sense to lie.

A final thought I had on the episode is that I thought it was pretty rich, coming from Archer, telling Trip how immature and wrong he was for his little escapade. I understand the notion that Archer always approaches it with the full support of command staff, and Trip was acting alone, but pretending that Archer wouldn’t have satisfied his curiosity is a bit of a stretch. The only difference between that incident and every other time is that Archer was gone, and therefore he and Trip didn’t hold hands while ruining that poor family’s lives together.

For the most part, Star Trek is a hard-science universe and encourages us to view religions in that context. DS9 and TNG, for example, it’s clear that humans are generally atheists. When Picard interfered with that proto-Vulcan culture, he wouldn’t play to their belief systems because he refused to lead them down a bronze-age religious path. DS9 shows it fairly well, the Bajorans see the wormhole aliens as the prophets, but even to people who have witnessed them firsthand they still wouldn’t call them prophets regularly.

Take Star Trek: The Final Frontier. Kirk never once accepted they were going to meet god, and as soon as he confronted “god” he begain his kirkian mind games. One streak we notice with all the Trek captains is that they are astute students of the humanities. Kirk too has a deep appreciation for history and literature. So when he’s talking about God he’s not speaking as though he’s some southern baptist. I imagine he has a deep respect for religions and has studied them somewhat, but at the end of the day he’s a walking science book.

The Federation would/should not make such a deal, it would be immoral to share technology with those that would use it to oppress others. That’s the exact type of Faustian bargain they could explore in an episode of Star Trek, maybe Discovery could take this one on.

Practically speaking, as soon as he speaks the words “Picard to Data”, the data connection is made. So you may be working with a 2-3 second delay, but this isn’t unheard of today in a video or voice call, so even with the initial delay it would hardly be noticable. Then consider they could cut silence or slightly speed up buffered audio until it catches up.

It’s a trope where each Trek species uses some human template, but with one or two attributes added or amplified. So it’s only natural all the Trek species would find Humans endearing.

Compared to the other Changelings, Odo isn’t a very good shapeshifter. They cover this in the episode “Children of Time” where Odo has a lifetime to practice shapeshifting and can more convincingly pull off human features. A good episode, if your interested in this sort of thing.

Seems like it would go far beyond this. Imagine a world where you go to work in a Holodeck; you enter the room, you say you want to go to Starfleet Command, and it appears around you, while simultaneously a hologram of you appears in the actual building somewhere in San Fransisco. Imagine you meet a girl there, and decide to have dinner with her. Perhaps she’s on the Enterprise, and you’re on DS9, if you both have access to a holodeck, why not just have the date virtually in the holodeck? As far as both of you are concerned, you might as well be meeting in real life. I think if I were living in those times, I’d just want a holodeck shuttlecraft and call it a day.
